Why Radon Matters Here
Every Iowa County Is EPA Radon Zone 1
Zone 1 is the EPA's highest radon potential category. That doesn't mean every home is high, but it does mean every home should be tested.
You can’t see or smell it
Radon is invisible and odorless. A home can look perfect and still test high. Testing is the only way to know.
Iowa soil makes it
Glacial soils left by the Des Moines Lobe hold uranium that breaks down into radon gas, which seeps into basements and slabs.
4.0 pCi/L is the line
The EPA recommends fixing any home at or above 4.0 pCi/L. Many Central Iowa homes test above it.
Deadlines don’t wait
A high result during a home sale can stall closing. A fast test and a one-visit install keep things moving.

How Does a Radon Mitigation System Work?
Most homes we fix use sub-slab depressurization (SSD), a type of active soil depressurization. A fan creates gentle suction under your basement floor, so soil gas gets pulled into a pipe and vented outside before it can seep into your home.
Crawl spaces get sub-membrane depressurization: a sealed plastic membrane over the dirt with suction underneath. Many Central Iowa homes have both a basement and a crawl space or slab addition, and we design for each.
Before we install, we may run a quick pressure field extension (PFE) test to see how far suction reaches under the slab. That tells us if one suction point is enough or if your home needs two.
The result: homes above the EPA's 4.0 pCi/L action level routinely drop below 1.0 pCi/L, with up to 98.9% radon reduction. Every install ends with a post-mitigation test, and every system carries a 5-year warranty.
What's in a Radon Mitigation System
01
Suction pit
We remove a small amount of soil under the slab to create an extraction point where the system pulls air.
02
Schedule 40 PVC pipe
Sealed pipe runs from the suction pit through the garage, attic or up the outside wall.
03
Inline radon fan
A quiet fan from makers like RadonAway, Festa or Fantech runs nonstop outside your living space.
04
U-tube manometer
A simple gauge on the pipe shows suction in inches of water column, so you can check the system at a glance.
05
Sealing
Airtight sump lids and polyurethane sealant on major cracks help the system build a stronger vacuum.
06
Roofline discharge
Radon exits above the roof, away from windows and doors, where it mixes into the open air.
Pricing
How Much Does Radon Mitigation Cost in Des Moines?
We don't guess at prices over the phone. Cost depends on your house, so we give you a firm quote after a short on-site assessment.
01
Foundation type
A basement, slab-on-grade, crawl space or a mix of these each need a different design. Combined foundations may need more than one suction point.
02
Number of suction points
Tight soils or a large footprint can need a second extraction point. The PFE test tells us what your slab needs.
03
Pipe routing
An interior route through the garage or attic is cleaner looking. An exterior route along the siding is often simpler. We show you both.
04
Sealing work
Open sump pits get an airtight lid and major slab cracks get sealed. Crawl spaces need a sealed membrane.

The Process
Our Radon Removal Process, From Test Result to Clearance Test
Four steps. Usually one install visit. A verified result at the end.
- 01
Test
Start with a professional continuous-monitor test, or send us your existing result. We help you read the number and decide if mitigation makes sense.
- 02
Assess
A technician checks your foundation, sump, cracks and pipe routes, and may run a pressure field extension (PFE) test to see how air moves under the slab.
- 03
Install
Most single-family installs are done in one visit, typically within a day. We seal the sump and major cracks and label the system.
- 04
Verify
We check the manometer and schedule a post-mitigation clearance test, run at least 24 hours after the fan starts, to confirm your new level.
Most single-family installs are completed in one visit, typically within a day.

Our Promise
Straight Answers. Clean Installs. Verified Results.
I started Radon Mitigation Des Moines in March 2016 because Central Iowa families deserved radon help that was honest and easy to reach. Ten years later, that's still the job. When you call, a real person answers, any hour.
We don't push systems you don't need. If your test is low, we'll tell you. If it's high, we design a system for your house, install it cleanly, test it, and stand behind it for five years.

Radon Removal Questions From Iowa Homeowners
What radon level requires mitigation?
The EPA recommends fixing your home if radon is 4.0 pCi/L or higher, and suggests considering mitigation between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. The World Health Organization uses a lower reference level of 2.7 pCi/L. Our systems routinely bring Central Iowa homes below 1.0 pCi/L.
How much does radon mitigation cost in Des Moines?
Cost depends on your foundation type, how many suction points the home needs, and whether the pipe runs inside through the garage or outside the house. We give you a firm quote after a short on-site assessment, and every system includes a 5-year warranty.
How long does a radon mitigation install take?
Most single-family installs are completed in one visit, typically within a day. We then schedule a post-mitigation test to confirm the system is working.
Do you offer a warranty on radon systems?
Yes. Every system and installation we complete is covered by a 5-year warranty.
Are your technicians certified?
Yes. Every technician who comes to your home is credentialed through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services radon program and holds training from at least one of NRPP, NRSB, CERTI or ICA School.
Do you serve Ames, Ankeny and the rest of Central Iowa?
Yes. From our Franklin Plaza office in Des Moines we serve 12 Central Iowa counties, including Ankeny and Johnston in Polk County, Ames and Nevada in Story County, Waukee and Adel in Dallas County, and Pella and Knoxville in Marion County.
How long does a professional radon test take?
A short-term professional test runs for at least 48 hours under closed-house conditions. We use continuous radon monitors, which record hourly readings, so you get your results quickly after the monitor is picked up.
Can you test during a home sale inspection period?
Yes. We schedule real estate tests around inspection deadlines and use tamper-resistant continuous monitors so buyers, sellers and agents can rely on the results.
My new home has a passive radon pipe but still tests high. Can you fix it?
Usually, yes. Adding an inline fan and a manometer to an existing passive stack turns it into an active system, which typically lowers levels a lot more than a passive stack can. We retest afterward to confirm.
